12 Foot diameter wind turbine alternator test
This is just a short video of alternator testing on the rear axle of my wonderful 1966 Volvo 122s station wagon. We ran the alternator for about 1 hour, producing between 1000 – 1500 Watts (20 – 30 amps) for about 1 hour before shooting the video to see how hot things would get. After one hour the hottest spots (right over the coils) were at about 170 deg F. I expect that on a wind turbine, on a tower… during a windy day, it should run much cooler and I expect this machine could produce 1500 Watts (maybe 2000 but that would be pushing things) all day long. Details about the alternator: The magnet rotors are 15 inches in diameter. Each rotor has 16 N42 grade NdFeB magnets, 2 inches in diameter x 1/2 inch thick. The coils in the stator (12 of them) are each wound with two strands of AWG 15 wire in hand (same as AWG 12 gauge really), and 68 turns per coil. The stator is 5/8″ thick and the total airgap between the magnet rotors is 15/16 inch. After the rectifier, the alternator produces 50 Volts DC at 125 rpm.
